What’s the hook?
A curse traps every fairy tale character in a small Maine town called Storybrooke. They don’t remember who they are. The only one who can break it? Emma Swan – the grown daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming, raised alone in the real world.
The show flips between fairy tale land and the real town. And somehow, it works.
Rotten Tomatoes gave it 80% fresh for early seasons. IMDB sits at 7.7/10 – solid for a 7‑season network show.
Why the DVD set beats streaming
I’ve watched it on Hulu and Disney+. Here’s what you lose:
-
The “previously on” recaps – sounds small, but OUAT hides clues in those recaps. Streaming cuts them.
-
Deleted scenes – some character moments (especially for Regina and Rumple) only exist on the DVDs.
-
Subtitles that actually match – streaming subs are often auto‑generated garbage. The DVD has proper English subs.
-
No removal risk – Disney+ edits or removes stuff sometimes. Your discs don’t phone home.
Season breakdown – which ones drag?
| Season | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Near‑perfect mystery box | Slow first 3 episodes |
| 2 | Great world‑building | Gets a bit lost mid‑way |
| 3 | Peter Pan arc = peak OUAT | — |
| 4 | Frozen arc works better than you’d think | Second half weaker |
| 5 | Dark Swan is fun | Camelot felt rushed |
| 6 | Good closure for most characters | Some filler |
| 7 | Soft reboot. Different, but sweet | Feels like a different show |
Most fans say stop at season 6 for the “real” ending. Season 7 is a bonus epilogue. I personally liked it – but it’s very different.
Who needs this box set
-
Fairy tale adults – you grew up on Disney, now you want the dark+hopeful version.
-
Lana Parrilla fans – her Evil Queen / Regina is one of the best TV performances of the decade.
-
People who love costume design – the dresses alone are worth pausing for.
-
Complete‑series collectors – factory sealed 1‑7 sets are getting harder to find.
The real talk
It’s cheesy. Sometimes it’s very cheesy. The CGI in early seasons… let’s just say the dragon doesn’t look great. But the emotional core – family, found family, redemption – lands harder than most prestige shows. I cried more times than I’ll admit.
Question for you: Regina or Emma? I’m team Regina’s redemption arc, but Emma’s leather jacket is iconic.
